TR5 Trophy English Wheeling

It’s been a while since my last post. Studying for an exam (CFA Level 2) and life in general has gotten quite busy. However, I was able to find some time (and motivation) to get out to the shop this past weekend and try a practice fender on the English Wheel. In my last post ( TR5 Trophy Fender Buck ) I made a Wood Buck using the specs given to me by a friend, based on an original TR5 Fender. Now for the sheet metal… I cut out a piece of 18ga mild steel. As for the dimensions, the length was the the full length of the fender buck (I wasn’t sure of how long I wanted the fender to be) and the width was an inch wider than the finished fender, this would allow for trimming or perhaps rolling over an edge to give the fender more strength. I laid out lines approximately 1/2 inch apart from each end of the sheet. This allowed for me to easily track straight while using the English Wheel. With the help of my Dad (supporting the other end of the panel), we had some shape with a few hours o...

TR5 Trophy Fender Buck

Had a great Thanksgiving weekend with my Dad. Spent the day developing a wood buck for shaping a rear fender (1953 TR5 Project.) What is a Wood Buck? a wood buck is simply a wood pattern used to reference the size and shape of your sheet metal when metal forming. Many people use wire forms or flexible tape to make patterns. However, the scrap plywood at the back of the shop made it the most appealing option. Mapping out a 15.5” radius on a piece of scrap 3/4” plywood. Quick cut with the Jig Saw… Laying out the spacing for the ribs of the buck, 6” apart seemed appropriate. Cutting relief holes in the spine of the buck so I can easily clamp the metal to the buck to check it’s form. 2” spokes / 2” spine. Using a piece of cardboard, we took a profile from the fender stays/supports and then cut 14 ribs to run along the spine of the buck. This is what consumed a lot of time... however, it worked out well. Added small supports for gluing and stapling. We used PL construction glue...
